EDIBLE URBAN OASIS

Our city-living London chef longed for a productive, bountiful but beautiful space to escape to – a plot to plate experience outside her garden door. The unusual L shaped plot provided a stimulating design challenge, which we fully embraced to create a captivating urban potager.

Through good design, food can be grown in even the smallest, most challenging of urban spaces. Subsequently achievement reward to mind, body and our planet. We have created a living larder of fresh vegetables and herbs to ignite our chef client’s culinary cuisine whilst creating an attractive outdoor room.

Always mindful of how we could improve our client’s experience of their outdoor space, every inch was considered. Planters are carefully spaced to allow the passage of a wheelbarrow. Raised and built from timber, they can be accessed from all sides, and are the perfect height for easy maintenance. Quiet, intimate shady seating areas are surrounded by layers of lush container planting for privacy and to invite quiet moments to sit and read the latest recipe book. A large deck continues the timber floor treatment from inside to out, creating a single room when the property’s large bi-fold doors open, for entertaining and the ultimate dining experience.

But the garden needed a centrepiece which captured the energy and vitality of the city, and our client. We worked with an architect to design a bespoke honeycomb potting shed and sculptural timber walls to give the vegetable garden an edge. When lit after dark the mesmerising effect transforms the garden after dark – the perfect talking point for after supper drinks.
