I feel extremely honoured to be mentioned as one of Hort Week’s 100 Leading Women in Horticulture and Pro Landscapers Top 10 Most Influential Women in Horticulture Lists. A proud moment indeed, and humbling too.

For over 25 years I’ve been proud to work in an industry in which The ...Landscape Institute’s Skills for Greener Places report recently reviewed skills and workforce issues, revealing that the landscape sector is male-dominated. So no surprises there then! It found management and build have the highest male concentrations, at 99.6% and 86.7% of their respective totals. To be completely honest, in my career, it’s been rare (but NOT unheard of) that I have personally found this to be a challenge – on the whole horticulture is the most generous of industries where expertise, passion and generosity of spirit are applauded, shared and respected no matter one’s sex.

Today I’d like to honour all the other women on these lists who inspire me every day. I know how hard they’ve worked, often juggling work with childcare responsibilities, giving that extra ounce of graft, not because they were competing with men, but because that is what we determined women do to support our industry, our teams and our passions. And all of us deserve to be paid equally with our valued, respected male friends and colleagues. Something I know that many men in our industry would agree with too…

I'd like to let my female colleagues know that I see each and every one of you and I admire you. I know how hard you’ve worked, how tough it’s been and how much you’ve achieved in order to share the transformative glory of horticulture in all its myriad forms. Today, and every day, I salute you and thank you for being here championing glorious horticulture with me and each other, side by side.

As a garden designer, I'm fortunate to be able to immerse myself in nature's wonderful gifts every day, but yesterday was exceptionally thrilling. I found myself in Peckover House's wonderful greenhouse sampling the fruit of the 300 year old orange trees planted there - what a ...treat! I can confirm they were absolutely DELICIOUS!

This charming two acre walled garden sits behind a classic Georgian townhouse in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, and because it's owned by the National Trust you can visit too - enjoy!

Overjoyed to see the glorious Dame Joanna Lumley on the cover of April's edition of @goodhousemag which includes a four-page feature on one of our gardens!

As a front garden space on a steeply sloping site, shaped like a triangular wedge of pie, the garden wasn't straightforward ...to design, but with Jackie's care and love for the space, it continues to develop and bring so much joy to the rest of the village.

For our client Jackie, the garden may result in less Housekeeping, but my word, the garden looks GOOD!

The beauty of our gardens is brought to life with 3D rendering software, giving our clients a visual representation at an early stage of the design process.

By keeping our production visuals in-house, we take control of our ideas enabling us to communicate them effectively to our clients....

The software we use captures and explores surface finishes, lighting effects and even seasonal weather conditions quickly and effectively.

And because we don't outsource this stage of the deliverables, we can be more flexible, creative and responsive to our client's needs.

For over twenty-five years our studio has seen outdoor space as places with exciting possibilities and @lumionofficial takes our client offer to the next level. Having trained in hand-draw drafting many years ago, I never thought I'd say this, but honestly? Technology really is exciting!!!

The 'Say NO to plastic grass and trees' campaign by The Society of Garden Designers supported by The RHS and the Landscape institute launches today and we at AMPG are proud to support it. Here's why:

1. They destroy natural habitats and soil.

It takes 2000 years to... form 100mm of topsoil which on installing plastic grass will be dug out and whats left will suffocate under plastic. Soil earthworms, natural organisms & fungi are killed, plants eliminated & all sources of food &rain habitat for insects, birds and animals destroyed.

2. They contribute to carbon emissions

They're made from fossil fuel-based plastics, the extraction & subsequent processing of which is a net producer of C02, with more carbon emissions produced by shipping it from overseas manufacturers. A real grass lawn both processes & absorbs C02 far outweighing the impact of using a lawn mower on the environment.

3. They contribute to urban heat islands

Real lawns cool themselves naturally through evaporation. In contrast, plastic lawns absorb the heat creating heat ‘islands’ that can be 26C hotter than the surrounding air.

4. They cause flooding

Natural lawns absorb rain helping to slow the flow of water into drains, plastic grass absorbs less than 50% causing run-off and flooding.

5. They pollute our waterways

They break down over time to be washed into our drainage system from where microplastics are discharged into our rivers and seas.

6. They are not biodegradable

They are made from a mix of plastics including polypropylene, polyurethane & polyethylene. None of which are biodegradable.

7. They can’t be recycled

There are currently no suitable recycling facilities in the UK, even for products claiming to be recyclable.

8. They have a short lifespan

A maximum of 15 years after install plastic lawns & plants will be diverted to landfill where they continue to pollute the environment.

9. They are not maintenance-free

Excrement & urine from animals & other wildlife including birds, mice, foxes & dogs; as well as organic detritus such as self-seeding grasses, weeds & moss. This means regular cleaning with disinfectant & other chemicals.

Why not just grow a natural lawn instead?
